Augusta Age-Friendly, where police officers shovel residents trapped by winter storms

For the 7th Annual Sand Buckets and Clear Paths Program, Augusta Age-Friendly, the City of Augusta Parks and Recreation Department, the Augusta Police Department, and the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office are combining efforts again. They will distribute free buckets of sand and shovel pathways for residential access and fuel delivery for Augusta residents who are 60+ years of age, have a disability or who arephysically unable to get buckets of sand or clear their pathways.

The Parks and Recreation crew, in the orange City trucks, will deliver one 5-gallon bucket of salted sand to residents’ homes or will provide refills to program participants who have their own buckets. Deliveries will begin after Thanksgiving.

The Kennebec County Sheriff’s staff and team will help clear snow from walkways, subject to time and personnel constraints that may not allow them to shovel immediately. It is important to have a backup plan in the event they cannot respond immediately.

Augusta Age-Friendly wishes to thank the following community partners: Aubuchon Hardware, Hancock Lumber, Harbor Freight Tools, Home Depot and Lowe’s for donating buckets for 2024-25.
