AARP Maine Advocates Raise Their Voices in Augusta: Our 2025 Legislative Agenda
As the 132nd Legislature convenes in Augusta, AARP Maine is ready to advocate on behalf of the more than 200,000 Mainers aged 50 and older. Our legislative agenda reflects the core values of dignity, purpose, and equity, ensuring that older adults and their families thrive in the Pine Tree State.
Supporting Family Caregivers
Unpaid family caregivers are the unsung heroes of Maine's long-term care system, contributing an estimated $2.9 billion annually in financial value. Yet, many of these 166,000 caregivers face significant out-of-pocket costs averaging $7,200 a year, jeopardizing their financial stability. AARP Maine is calling for the reinstatement of the Respite for ME program, which provided critical grants for respite care, assistive technology, and more. By codifying this program, lawmakers can make a lasting impact on caregivers' lives, easing financial burdens and supporting their vital contributions to Maine's communities.
Ensuring Fair Utility Costs
Maine’s older population faces increasing challenges from high utility rates coupled with rising housing, food, and medical expenses. AARP Maine is advocating for transparency in rate changes and stronger consumer protections to ensure fair and reasonable utility rates. Policies that reevaluate costs transferred to ratepayers, including subsidies, are essential for protecting vulnerable Mainers and ensuring they can continue to live with dignity.
Addressing the Housing Crisis
Affordable, accessible housing is fundamental for people of all ages and ability levels. AARP Maine supports legislative solutions that promote a diverse range of housing options, including age-friendly and universally designed homes. These measures must prioritize long-term equity, safety, and stability, empowering Mainers to remain in their communities as they age.
Promoting Home and Community-Based Services
The majority of Mainers 50-plus wish to age in place, yet achieving this requires robust home and community-based services. AARP Maine urges lawmakers to prioritize funding for services that allow older adults to stay in their homes and communities. Investing in long-term services and supports is not only socially preferred, but also financially prudent.
Advancing High-Speed Internet and Digital Equity
In today’s digital economy, high-speed internet is a necessity. AARP Maine is committed to ensuring that all Mainers, especially older adults, have access to affordable and reliable internet. Alongside federal investments in infrastructure, AARP Maine will work with policymakers to promote digital equity, ensuring that vulnerable populations have the tools and skills to thrive online.
Looking Ahead
AARP Maine is excited to engage with the 132nd legislative session through initiatives like our "Tuesdays at the State House" or TASH program, where volunteers advocate for the issues that matter most to Mainers 50-plus. Together, we can make Maine a place where older adults and their families continue to live, work, retire, and thrive.
