Winter News from Sullivan
A Note from Candy Eaton
Winter is a busy time for Age-Friendly Sullivan. Candy Eaton, Coordinator, Age-Friendly Sullivan, shares a few of the projects the team does to keep residents warm, safe, and socially connected during winter months.
Sand Buckets / Snow Shoveling
Last winter we served 34 households with sand-buckets and shoveling of steps and walkways. The intent is to not interfere with professionals who are paid to plow/shovel driveways, but to help older adults access their cars safely. We currently have 30 on the list, as some have passed away or moved away. We have 2 older gentlemen who deliver sand-buckets and shovel on behalf of Age-Friendly Sullivan.
WindowDressers
We partner with WindowDressers to encourage local residents to add low-cost window inserts to improve comfort and warmth of interior spaces, lower heating costs, and participate in the local build in Ellsworth in September. I personally have used 3 of these inserts in my 1860 Cape and noticed a significant difference in comfort. Kit Lane is the Hancock County Coordinator. Now that we have installed new windows at our home, I’m ready to donate these inserts to anyone.
Community Senior Food Program
This food box home delivery service runs year round and we have 2-3 volunteers who pick-up the EAAA CSFP food boxes from Good Shepherd at the Ellsworth Elks Lodge on the first Tuesday of each month, and deliver them to eligible older adults in Sullivan, Sorrento, and Franklin. This reduces the number of transportation requests by all of these primarily homebound folks.
