A Place to Rest in Richmond
Laurie Saunders
Benches on Main Street Richmond provide a place to rest and enjoy the historic downtown
Laurie Saunders, Director of the Senior Center in Richmond, works closely with people in the community to ensure that projects will benefit people of all ages.
Oftentimes, Laurie hears people talking about changes that they would like to have to happen. This allows her to brainstorm with residents and bring ideas to the Lifelong Richmond committee, such as the need for benches.
Richmond sits on a large hill by the river. After hearing the idea, the committee walked the downtown area to decide places where resting spots would be most used and most beneficial. Benches, with help from the Richmond Highway Department, were then placed in front of stores, schools, and by the library
Funding for this project came from an AARP Challenge Grant.
Recently, Lifelong Richmond applied for a grant to fund a new program that will greet new residents. This program will include having people to welcome and sharing welcome bags that include information a new resident can use.
